Edge in the Community

We’ve notched up 30+ years in the filmmaking business, so we’ve got plenty of experience and knowledge to share – and we like to put this to good use as much as we can!

Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve had a couple of great opportunities to share our insight and experience with the next generation of aspiring filmmakers…

First up, Nick Canner (Creative Director) and Sawan Nair (Production Manager) spoke recently at the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment – an opportunity we were thrilled to take part in. The OAE is one of the most prominent period instrument orchestras in the UK, and the story of their inception and everything they’ve achieved is one we find hugely inspiring!

It was founded in the late 1980s by likeminded musicians who wanted to move away from traditional model of orchestras that focus on the leadership of one figure, e.g. a conductor, whose decision and vision is final in all matters. Instead, they wanted to explore a new, democratic model based on equality and inclusiveness that would allow everyone across the group to have equal value of input in everything the Orchestra does as well as aiming to bring their art to as far and wide an audience as possible, and particularly people in deprived areas who are the least likely to have access.

This was a key part of the Orchestra’s decision to move to Acland Burleigh School, Tufnell Park in 2020 to establish their permanent headquarters, and where that Nick and Sav were invited to go and talk about working in our industry and the different forms of creativity we explore day in, day out.

Speaking to a group of students, they talked through the process of making a film: from idea to scripting, and then bringing a project to life on screen. Through a series of workshop activities, discussions and exercises, along with relevant film examples, they explored what it takes to create a professional production from start to finish.

It was a really exciting event to take part in and we’re hugely honoured to be able to help support the OAE – and we hope to continue to do so for many years to come!

As part of National Careers Week, Nick and Hamza Pool (Production Assistant) were invited to take part in an online chat hosted by Sam Hornsby, co-founder of ERIC. Eric is a UK-based career discovery platform that works to connect young people with potential career opportunities across the creative industries, and we were delighted to be able to support what they do!

We love the story behind ERIC and the values that underpin the initiative, and it was a great chance to talk with Sam about life and work at The Edge, as well as discussing Nick and Hamza’s different routes into establishing careers in the world of film & TV.

Unsurprisingly, we love being part of such a vibrant and thriving sector, and we’re hugely supportive of ERIC’s mission to help young people find their path into the creative industries to achieve their ambitions. If you’re a young person looking to find new connections and new opportunities in the UK creative sector, we highly recommend you check out ERIC!

We love every opportunity we get to spread the good word about working in an industry we love, and it’s great to be be able to support two innovative and impactful initiatives – and we can’t wait to do it again!
